Computing at The Rural Enterprise Academy
" Everybody in this country should learn to program a computer because it teaches you how to think.” Steve Jobs
Introduction
The Computing department equips students with essential skills and knowledge to thrive in a technology-driven world. Through an engaging and comprehensive curriculum, we aim to develop confident, digitally literate learners who can solve problems creatively and responsibly. Our facilities and resources support a hands-on approach, encouraging students to explore a variety of computing concepts and applications.
The Creative iMedia department empowers students to explore the exciting and ever-evolving world of digital media. With a focus on real-world skills and creative problem-solving, the department fosters innovation and technical proficiency. Staffed by passionate educators, we provide a stimulating environment that supports learners in building their confidence and abilities in digital media production.
Curriculum Intent
Our computing curriculum is designed to inspire students to understand and shape the digital world around them. By blending computational thinking, programming, and digital literacy, we aim to create learners who are both proficient users and innovative creators of technology. The curriculum promotes resilience, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills, ensuring students are well-prepared for future education, careers, and everyday life in a rapidly changing technological landscape.
Using the ‘Teach Computing’ framework, we deliver a progressive curriculum that introduces key concepts such as algorithms, data representation, and computer networks while fostering creativity through programming projects. This structured approach enables students to build a strong foundation in computing and digital technologies, equipping them with the tools to succeed academically and beyond.
Computing KS3 – Overview
At Key Stage 3, students follow the ‘Teach Computing’ curriculum, which covers topics such as programming, data and information, networks, and computer systems. The curriculum is sequenced to build knowledge and skills year by year, with lessons that include interactive activities, hands-on coding projects, and theoretical discussions. Regular assessments and feedback ensure students can track their progress and achieve mastery of key computing principles.
Computing KS4 - Overview
At Key Stage 4, students no longer have bespoke computing lessons. However, we still ensure they complete the KS4 national curriculum by including it in the subjects they study. All pupils will have timetabled lessons in the computer rooms where they will be encouraged to build on the skills they learnt at Key Stage 3. This includes developing the capabilities in computer science and information technology as well as teaching them to understand how changes in technology affect safety, including new ways to protect their online privacy and identity, and how to identify and report a range of concerns.
OCR Creative iMedia KS4 Option – Overview
“Creativity takes courage.” Henri Matisse
Our aim is to develop confident, skilled, and creative students who are prepared for careers or further study in the digital and creative industries. The curriculum provides hands-on experience in media concepts such as graphic design, game creation, and interactive media, enabling students to produce professional-quality outcomes. We encourage collaboration, innovation, and adaptability, ensuring that students can thrive in a fast-paced, technology-driven world.
At Key Stage 4, students study the OCR Cambridge National in Creative iMedia. This course includes practical units such as “Creating Digital Graphics” and “Interactive Digital Media,” alongside theoretical aspects like understanding media pre-production. Assessment includes both internally assessed coursework and external exams, offering a balanced approach to learning and achievement.

Enrichment Opportunities
Students are encouraged to participate in our vibrant extra-curricular activities, including Minecraft and Gaming clubs, which enhance teamwork and digital creativity. In addition to these opportunities in school, pupils can also opt to take part in a trip to the Harry Potter Studios aimed at inspiring students by exploring behind-the-scenes media production techniques.
Studying Creative iMedia Post-16
Studying Creative iMedia at KS4 opens up a wide range of post-16 opportunities. Students can progress to college courses such as Level 3 Cambridge Technicals in Digital Media, A-Levels in Media Studies or Graphics, and vocational pathways in Game Design or Film Production. Many students also pursue apprenticeships in areas like Digital Marketing, Web Design, and Media Production, gaining hands-on industry experience. The skills gained through Creative iMedia form a strong foundation for further study and careers in the creative and digital sectors.
